Do you know what adjustable steel columns are? It’s a collective name for devices used to give extra structural support, often during a remodel. You might find these columns installed in your home to give some extra support to a wooden or steel beam.
These columns are manufactured with a hollow core, and because of this they can be extended to better fit the needs of the building where they are installed. If you do have adjustable steel columns in your home, how can you know that they are installed correctly and won’t pose a danger?
The poles should have been painted with a paint that prevents rust to ensure that they will last a long time. If this is not the case, or if the paint has either worn off or been scraped off, you will notice signs of rust. This means the poles need to be replaced.
If the poles are leaning more than 1 inch over the fully extended length, they are not going to work properly, and the same is the case if they are not mechanically fastened at the top and bottom. A structural engineer needs to take a look at your home to determine the correct size of pole required, as well as where it needs to be installed.
